Every morning I drive my son to school and we’ve gotten into the habit of listening to books on CD. Living in a large metropolitan area, he and I spend over an hour in the car each day, and sometimes much more. These audiobooks give us something to share and enjoy together.
Recently, I was in the middle of a difficult transition in my business and the conflict that surrounded the event was consuming me. I was having a hard time sleeping and really not engaging with anyone because my mind was completely consumed with controlling the outcome of the situation.
My son and I had started listening to Book #4 of a series we enjoyed on our morning commute. We were about half-way through the book when something caught my attention one morning. One of the characters made an uncharacteristic move. When I paused the CD and asked my son what was going on, he looked at me like I had three heads!
He said, “Haven’t you been listening, Mom?” Hmmmmm, good question!
I let that question really sink in for a minute or two……or three.
While I had been in the car and seeming to listen along, my mind had spent the past week or more playing out all the different scenarios of the conflict and what outcomes would ensue.
In all honesty, I hadn’t been listening at all. And I had to admit that to myself, and to my child.
Proverbs 4:23 (NCV) reminds us…
“Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life.”
And I had certainly allowed those thoughts to run my life for a couple weeks. In that moment of realization, I hit my mental DELETE button and began DELETING any thought that crept into my mind that served that situation.
I realized very quickly how many thoughts were coming at me and how quickly I would run down the proverbial rabbit hole with them. Allowing them to play out all the way to the end with no positive outcome.
Allowing our thoughts to run rampant in our heads is the quickest way to devastate our own life. Allowing those fiery darts cast by the enemy into our minds hoping they will take root is how he holds so many of us captive and stuck in fear.
When we take complete control over the thoughts that we allow to expand in our minds, we win at life! It’s a moment-by-moment, day-by-day, week-by-week, month-by-month challenge. You can Do This! You CAN win. You can succeed at anything you put your mind to accomplishing because you are LIVING SCRIPTURE STRONG!
